POLICE FREE SCHOOLS
in collaboration with youth and organizations across the nation, the campaign is a formation of youth-led grassroots organizations fighting to end the criminalization of youth in the classroom, create liberatory educational spaces, and implement an affirmative vision of safety and transformative justice.
Removing SROs is part of a larger demand to Defund the Police through the Black Lives Matter movement spreading across the United States.
There was an SRO attack on a student at Spring Valley High School in 2015 that brought national attention to the problems with the presence of police in schools.
SROs are not trained in child and adolescent development, so its no surprise that many more incidents like the one at Spring Valley, have occurred. It is past time for Richland County School Districts to cut ties with School Resource Officers.
We must end the harmful practice of staffing our schools with SROs. We demand that Richland County follow the lead of Minneapolis, MN, Portland, OR and other districts throughout the states and immediately end contracts with SROs to invest in our children's public safety and wellness through social workers, mental health counselors, and restorative justice practices in schools.
RAISE THE AGE
EveryBlackGirl, Inc has joined the Campaign for Youth Justice to increase the age of those who are arrested and sentenced under juvenile law.
YOUTH PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH PROJECT
Youth Participatory Action Research explores issues impacting young Black women and Black girls, trans and gender nonconforming youth in schools, with a particular focus on sexual harassment and violence by law enforcement in and around schools. This is in collaboration with In Our Names Network.
DISTURBING SCHOOLS LAW for South Carolina
In partnership with the ACLU, EveryBlackGirl, Inc is pursuing a legal challenge to Disturbing Schools Law in South Carolina. The successful removal of this law would become a model for removing the law in 21 other states. Currently, in SC the law has been amended not removed.
